Fun Facts About Ontario, Canada
Ontario is the second largest province in Canada, covering an area of more than one million square kilometres; it's bigger than the countries of Spain and France combined! Ontario extends north to Hudson's Bay, south to the Great Lakes, west to the Manitoba border, and east to Quebec. It should come as no surprise that such a vast province would have great diversity in its landscape and terrain.
From the wild and craggy beauty of the northern Canadian Shield to the lakes and forests of cottage country; from the rolling hills of the Ontario farm belt to the scenic wonders of the Niagara Escarpment… Ontario rivals any place on earth for diversity and natural wonders.
Ontario Geography & Weather
● The province boasts over 250,000 lakes which account for approximately one-fifth of the world's fresh water.
● The temperature in Ontario can go to extremes. In the dead of winter, temperatures can plummet to as low as -40C, while in the summer, they can rise to over 30C.
● Ontario is home to the longest freshwater beach in the world. Wasaga Beach on Georgian Bay is 14 kilometres in length.
● The longest street in the world is in Ontario. Yonge Street / Highway 11 is 1,896 kilometres long.
● The world's third largest tower is in Toronto, Ontario. The CN Tower, at 1,815 feet high, is a must-see landmark.
Rich & Diverse Culture
There is great diversity in Ontario's population as well. Home to more than 13.5 million people, the province is a multicultural mosaic whose citizens hail from all corners of the globe. Although English and French are Ontario's official languages, there are over 100 other dialects and languages spoken.
Ontario's food scene is a major beneficiary of multiculturalism, offering residents and visitors an almost unlimited choice of international cuisines. Festivals, fairs, parades, and exhibitions—Toronto Caribbean Carnival, Jambana One World Festival, Italfest, MuslimFest, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, the Orillia Highland Games—offer something for everyone.
The People of Ontario
The most populated area—the Golden Horseshoe—extends along the north shore of Lake Ontario and contains the cities of Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, St. Catharines, and Niagara Falls. The Greater Golden Horseshoe area extends north to include Barrie, Newmarket, Bradford, Oshawa, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, and Peterborough. Altogether, approximately nine million people live in this area of southern Ontario.
Population centers in other regions of Ontario include London, Kincardine, Windsor and Sarnia in southwestern Ontario, and Ottawa, Kingston, Belleville, Prince Edward County, Gananoque, Brockville in southeastern Ontario. In central Ontario, hubs include the Muskoka Lakes region, Huntsville, Bracebridge, and the Kawartha Lakes; in northern Ontario, major centres include Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, Timmins, Thunder Bay, Dryden, and Kenora.
For quick and easy reference to everything you need to know about a particular area of Ontario, the Summer Fun Guide has divided the province into seven regions: Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, Niagara Region, Eastern Ontario, Central Ontario, Northern Ontario, and Southwestern Ontario. Each region offers a wealth of sights to see and places to visit.
